The Hershel Parker (not to be confused with Herschel Walker or Melville
Herskowitz) bio is astoundingly good, but it only goes (at this point) up
to 1851. it's about 900 pages, though, so you get plenty of meat about the
first 32 years of his life. Everything after MOBY-DICK has yet to be
covered, though. I haven't read the Laurie Robertson-Lorant bio, although
I have it on second-hand reports that it leaves something to be desired.
