Otto mentions that there is in fact a binary in Jewish
mysticism:
A distinction between Kabbalah in the wake of Judaism and
Kabbalah under
the influence of Gnosticism id very important to GR. The
former basically conceived of
the Creation as good, "except as it has been marred or
altered by
man's disobedience or wickedness"; the latter considered the
Creation "world evilly made by hostile demons." Since the
distinction of these two visions of the universe is often
ambiguous in Kabbalah itself --the Zohar is a case in point
--,allowances
must be made for overlappings and repetitions.
In Merkabah, the quester's aim was not to seek union with
God (there is love of god) but merely, after having crossed
several rooms or palaces, to contemplate the heavenly Throne
in the central chamber. According to an Aggadic tradition
recounted in Gravity's Rainbow, this vision was granted to
Isaac at the moment "Abraham was about
to sacrifice him." Again, fathers and sons and sacrifice,
same theme all the way to M&D. During the voyage, pilgrim
mystics had to negotiate seven passages through doorways
guarded by demons or angels or archons. The description of
this "active way" in the novel does not explicitly state the
number of rooms or palaces (see GR 749-50) but
if we count the "half a dozen offices or anterooms"
Brigadier Pudding has to "negotiate" to reach his "Domina
Nocturna" or the "flve or six .."nested one inside the
other" that Slothrop goes through at "Der Platz" (GR 436),
we arrive at this mystical
number. At the end of his pilgrlmage Pudding is humiliated
by Katje
thereby re-living his traumatic encounter with death in the
trenches. Slothrop, on the other hand, only finds "a last
hollow courtyard of the same cooking and garbage and piss
decades old."
If we say that Benny is Picaro/parody and what about
Stencil's romantic quest? Slothrop, in a far more
interesting way, combines both, doesn't he?
