"The interesting thing about the binary opposition of religion vs
science is that they both claim to be the 'origin' of everything, both
claim to be able to tell the Truth. I can see no logical reasons why
this should be called anti-religious. Those critics who say that GR is
a secular attack on Christianity (the novel surely is critical of Chr.
but that's another thing)haven't seen the other side or they must have
said that at the same time it's a "transcendent" attack on science
too."
It could be said, however, that both _GR_ and _V._ are critical of both
science and religion, especially when aspects of each are merged into
some sort of Frankenstein's monster. Those that "worship" technology
and/or use scientific methods to determine or explain everything about
life, even those things about which we can probably never discover the
truth, will most likely not be satisfied with the results. On the
other hand, using religion to explain physical reality, so far as it
can be discerned even by scientific methods, will also most likely be
disappointing. People concoct all sorts of variations of the monster
in order to cope with whatever reality is presented to them. I believe
this is what makes both books incredibly interesting. Pynchon
contrasts those that are thrown into situations and forced into
developing some method to cope with their life's dramas with those who
consciously concoct methods to deal with these same dramas and control
those of others.
