Friends of mine went as Jack and Jackie ca. November 22nd, 1963 a coupla
Hallowe'ens ago. Red paint and a flip-up hairpiece. Reminds me, years
ago, a friend's family was given an uncle's big ol' early 60s black
Lincoln Continental convertible. We took turns cruising around being
JFK. But I think I might have, in my irresponsible younger days, been
(ir)responsible for a supremely offensive moment on Hallowe'en, going as
an illegal abortionist. "Bloodied" (i.e., red-painted [cf. J-L Godard
on shotting "the colr red" vs. "blood"?]) lab coat, coathanger, the
works. Business card reading, "When in doubt, rip it out." Keeping in
mind that this was "Costume Day" or somesuch at a Catholic boys' high
school. The nun teaching my religion class, in particular, was suitably
horrified (which was my excuse, "hey, it's about horror ..."). A
friend went as Hitler, but, hey, he looked just like him, so ... but I
guess that's what you get for appropriating a pagan holiday. In recent
years, I've taken to going as anybody I could reasonably imitate whilst
wearing my own clothes: David Lynch, Gale Gordon (but try keeping that
voice going for hours on end: "Weeeellll ..."), Linus from "Peanuts"
(that blanket comes in handy when you pass out). Thinking J. Jonah
Jameson ("Miss Brant!") this year ...
