It's mentioned in the current New Yorker that Joe Kennedy, Jr. was killed 
just after take off when the bomber he was riding in crashed in Aug 1944.  
The B-24 was headed towards Brittanny to bomb V-2 bases there.  The article 
is a collection of Joe Kennedy Sr.'s letters.
