Hamletmaschine in NYC

For any Lister in the New York area:

Periferico de Objetos, an avant-garde theater company from Argentina,
is performing a Spanish-language version of Heiner Mueller's
"Hamletmaschine." Called "Maquina Hamlet," it is running at BAM --
Brooklyn Academy of Music -- this Thursday, October 19 through
Saturday October 21. And given the current events in the Middle East
and especially Yugoslavia, their timing seems almost prophetic....

I was fortunate enough to see last night's opening performance, and
it was just stunning. The company held nothing back -- it was tense,
stark, confrontational, and extremely well executed. Not only did
they add an interesting Argentine flavor to the work, they completely
deconstructed ("Re-deconstructed" it, perhaps?) it to the core and
then re-imagined it, upping the element of self-reflexivity and using
most of Mueller's stage directions as just another level of text.

I though the List might be particularly interested, not just because
of Mueller's pomo cred, but this particular production has a lot of
synergy with "V." -- it might have been produced by SHOCK and SHROUD!
One of the key elements of the production was the masterful use of
puppetry. Hamlet was chillingly portrayed by (or even better,
"projected onto") a passive mannequin, and the way they forced the
puppets and mannequins into increasing levels of dehumanization was
seriously disturbing. The Inanimate permeated every aspect of the
work....

Anyway, here's a good piece from the NYT on both Heiner Mueller and
Periferico de Objeto:
