Weber hardly "championed" bureaucracy. He merely described its motivation,
evolution, and operation. He pointed out that, like all industrial-age Western
techniques, it is ruthlessly rational and efficient, hence certain to replace or
obliterate whatever tribal, primitive, unscientific, and spontaneous (i.e.,
non-automatic) forms of social and political organization preceded it.
