One of a number of references that suggest the practice of plastic surgery involves the conversion of the quick into the inanimate by degrees. Slab, complaining to Rachel about Esther's nose job, shows her a portrait of Esther and says: "Look at it, the nose. Why does she want to get that changed. With the nose she is a human being."

And then there's Evan Godolphin, who we'll meet soon, and whose doctor (disastrously) "favored allografts: the introduction of inert substances into the living face."
