What the hell, I'll toss out one remotely plausible source for the
name, although it's probably bogus: Jackie McLean, an alto player
who was a disciple of Parker and one of the premier post-bop
saxophonists. You can read about him at:

He also occupies one-quarter of A. B. Spellman's very good

He flourished at the time the novel was being written, so
