Actually, we had a national referendum recently in which the motion to
become a republic on January 1, 2001 was defeated, quite soundly in fact.
The turning point in the opinion polls came, I think, when the monarchist
lobby shifted their campaign strategy away from the 'pro-monarchy' angle to
the 'anti-republican models on offer' angle. So, from that, I'd venture that
most Australians *don't* want to be like, or "be", Americans. Seems we, at
least, *can* wait, after all.

Robert Hughes, btw, based in LA I think these umpteen years, was a staunch
supporter of the republican cause. 'Nuff said.
