My 2 cents:
Terrance's reply above pretty well summarizes the problem that TRP
constantly puts before his readers. The characters and situations are USED
in various ways to convey symbolic meaning, and to force "reality" on them
is to miss the point entirely. Terrance's overlaying them with meanings
that are unattractive is entirely in line with the way they were meant to be
USED.
I won't at this point try to interpret (deconstruct?) the message contained
in the liberated gays' worship of Blicero. Maybe later. But they do seem
analogous to the SOS Hereros as a kind of pathology generated in response to
an extended and intense abuse at the hands of an overwhealming power, which
is again pretty much what Terrance has said. It ISN'T a pretty picture, and
we're ALL degenerates.
