I don't read too much contemporary fiction in German. A few random opinions
nevertheless: I second Kai's recommendation of Goetz und Diederichsen. One
of the best German novels after the war, for this reader, is Eckhard
Henscheid's "Geht in Ordnung- sowieso-- genau---". Henscheid has become a
bit of a pain in the ass by now, IMHO, but this is great stuff. I'd also
highly recommend Elfriede Jelinek (co-translator of GR) and especially
Thomas Bernhard (who died a few years ago). Try www.perlentaucher.de to find
some names and reviews.
