There's no getting around the fact that for Millison there are two
and only two possibilities--free discretion in who one must or is allowed
to take for a sex partner (which by the way until quite recent times has
only been a possibility for the very most fortunate of the human race and
is still the exception in the world by all accounts) and the other extreme
in which one has NO discretion. It makes no difference whatever that poor
Pynchon is trying his damnedest to portray a case somewhere between. It
just can't happen sez Millison. 

OK, I know in advance from past experience that I've miscontrued his
words again. It's a specialty of mine it seems.
