ok, let's confess: me too was disappointed most of the time, but there also
were two or three great moments, & i now know this rainbow better than any
other novel (- except maybe for rdb's "keiner weiß mehr" which is much
shorter). however, we sureley missed some bigger opportunities ... it's just
like always: - few people do a lot (- & through this: tend to lose themselves
in their very own life-dramas), most people do nothing, only lookie-lookie & "i
wish xy would still be there, like in that last century when we had all
those oh so meaningful discussions" ... i agree to blame it to "human nature"
(- whatever that might be ...). if you people really read v together i'll keep
on to the text, & throw my shabby groschen now & then. not as often as during
the grgr [- yes, yes, i post too much, but that's only because you post too
little ...], since there are things to be done: sometimes, believe it or not,
even european social scientists have to work hard. if there won't be any group
read, i personally will start to rereread m&d. interests me more than v. but
don't believe spirits or opportunities will be better in spring ... they won't.

see you: kai //:: ps: if these non-p group read suggestions (jr, been down so
long ...) won't stop, i will start to suggest vollmann's "the royal family"
every saturday from now on. what a wonderful book! here comes an entertaining
passage which might or might not make you laugh:

 "where's mugsy? she said.
mugsy's taking a little nap, said her mother-in-law, with the usual smile of
instant inanity that came whenever that creature was mentioned. suddenly,
awaking from her loving trance, she said: irene, is it true koreans eat dogs?
yes, mom, in korea. but i never have. my father's side of the family really
likes them, though. you want to hear a funny story, mom? when we first moved
to this country, my second uncle and auntie went to the supermarket, and they
couldn't read english very well, so when they got to the aisle where the pet
stuff is and they saw all those bags of dog food, you know, with the different
pictures of dogs on the different brands, they thought it was different kind
of dog meat, and they said: wow, what a great country america is; it has
  everything!
oh, my god, said mrs. tyler.
i'm sorry, mom. did i say anything wrong? i was just trying to---" (p. 51)
