That Epicetus quote sounds absurd, maybe because it's only a fragment.  It's 
like saying, "If you try to avoid pain, sooner or later you'll be 
miserable."

On a related note, some see life as preparation for death.  This perspective 
is not necesarily "at the expense of life."  A life "well-lived" is seen by 
some as the best preparation for death.
