Jane is too painfully preoccupied to feel a twinge of
self-reproach at this undeserved praise. I've walked her up
around the world, but she only glanced at Lear's Fool from
time to time, unconscious even as we plunged ankle-deep in
snows at the bottom of the earth, unconscious of everything
but trembling suspense about what would go on here after we
have departed, the effects on each of You, on each of us,
one the future of our lot. No, not quite unconscious of
everything else. Deeper down I felt, half-smothered by
passionate desire and dread, there was the sense that we
ought not to be considering your future; that we ought to
accept the consequences of our departure, the multiple we
have become, our own miserable Fool, our own Clare, the
hapless child of our dirty little affair here. But we lack
such moral courage, such fortitude necessary. We fail, we
falter, we flicker and flicker and fade. Alas, alas,  we are
but cyber stuff that posts are made on, zeros and ones
beneath the hammer of god's own hacker angels.  
Look up. Look up you doppelgangers of cyber space. How calm
the heavens are tonight.
