"Really, Jack was essentially a private person, so he was defenceless 
with the press. He wanted his work to be famous, but he didn't want 
Jack Kerouac to be famous. Allen Ginsberg tried to help him out. 
Allen loved publicity and tried to deflect attention from Jack, but 
none of us could protect him. We couldn't hide the hostile reviews, 
the sarcastic comments, the shallow parodies of the Beats. Jack
was hurt by all of it and thought that the publicity diminished his 
achievement."
