Chicago's Biograph theater closed
CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago officials shut down the historic Biograph
theater, where gangster John Dillinger was gunned down, for failure
to pay taxes. The Department of Revenue also on Wednesday closed six
other theaters in the Meridian Entertainment Group, including two at
Water Tower mall on Chicago's Magnificent Mile. The department did
not disclose the amount owed by the theater chain, though Director
Bea Reyna-Hickey called it "significant." In 1934, federal agents
gunned down Dillinger as he walked out of the Biograph with a woman
dressed in red, who had tipped off authorities. They had watched a
Clark Gable film, "Manhattan Melodrama." See
