I'm reminded of his response to the _Soho Weekly News_ back in the late 60s
or early 70s, when it ran an article by John Calvin Batchelor claiming that
Pynchon was Salinger. "Not bad, keep trying" was what Pynchon wrote back in
reply.

And, there is also the letter about the derivation of the name "Genghis
Cohen":

I tend to agree with the sentiments in this 1998 _Salon_ article about the
stream of over-zealous (or just jealous?) stalkers who have been trying to
"hunt and truss" Pynchon since the mid-60s:
