Making Papa Proud: Roth Wins PEN/Faulkner Award

Phillip Roth has won the $15,000 2001 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction for
his novel The Human Stain (Houghton, $26). He'll take home a cash prize of
$15,000.

Roth, who previously won the award in 1994 for his novel Operation Shylock,
is the only author other than John Edgar Wideman to win the award twice.

The book, which examines the ever shifting social morays of America in the
1990's, caps a trilogy of novels covering post-WWII life in the America
which include the novel, I Married a Communist, about the McCarthy era, and
America Pastoral, which looks at the period during the Vietnam War.
