----------
(254) if dreams are only waking sensation first stored and later operated
on, then the dreams of a voyeur can never be his own.
----------
Mondaugen's Story is not his own. M. has been lured progressively by a
coalition into Foppl's dream of 1904.
----------
(260) M.'s own father had died not so many years ago, somehow involved in
the Kiel revolt. That the son should think of him at this point indicated
that somehow Godlphin hadn't been the only one in the room to be "visited."
As the partying rushed into phantasmagoria at and around their supposedly
insulated turret, into blur, there had grown increasingly one wavering
projection: Evan Godolphin, whom M. had never seen save by the dubious
flouorescence of nostalgia he didn't want, nostalgia forced on him by
something he was comming to look on as a coalition.
----------
Q: Why does Evan Godolphin become the focus of the coalitions/M.'s dream?
----------
(255) So in a passage (memory, nightmare, yarn, maundering [pun intended],
anything) ostensibly his host's mondaugen could at least note that though
the events were Foppl's, the humanity could easily have been Godolphin's
----------
"Events" vs. "Humanity" is the struggle that evolves in Mondaugen's fitful
dream-screen. Vera plays her part as a sort of memory-vampire, but she
wants old Hugh. Foppl needs no encouragement to remember. Kurt is a
blank/young slate.
The dreams that Kurt dreams are full of pathos. Their events are hideous,
but the feelings of the participant are thoughtful, and growingly
remorseful. Remorse is the beginning of a change, even though this dreaming
ends in only the bleakest forseeable future.
The Sons are the battleground in this struggle. Can they change course?
Mondaugen quits the party and learns his own humanity, his weakness. But
who was this coalition? And did they intend to teach him something? Did
they succeed or fail in their mission? Could it be that Vera was the
familiar directing Kurt's dreams?
Could V. be trying to instruct the Son?
