I wish I had that Dugdale book -- I recently picked up a copy of Steppenwolf
to give to my son to read, and it would interesting to see how Dugdale links
it to V. Pynchon talks about having access to his dreams in the Slow Learner
intro, if I remember correctly, or maybe it's in one of his book reviews or
the Sloth essay, perhaps both/and/all. My impression, based on Pynchon's
statements, is that dreams have been an important creative source for him,
so it's not surprising, perhaps, to see it surface so often in his fictions.
Recall the bit in M&D where he brings in the Senoi, I think it is, the
people who discuss and otherwise significantly deal with dreams in their
daily lives. I'm not aware of anybody who knows details about whatever it
was that lead to Pynchon writing a cover support quotation for the James
Hillman & Michael Ventura book, but that would also seem to indicate a
certain level of interest. Not that Pynchon's personal predilections or
extra-textual (if such exist) statements have to matter with regard to V. or
GR, but I find them of interest at least.
