Actually, by 1914, Germany controlled a colonial empire that rivaled the UK &
France. The sun never set on that empire, either. In Africa, the Germans
controlled the modern nations of Burundi, Cameroons, Namibia (South-West
Africa), Rwanda, Tanzania (minus Zanzibar), & Togo. In China, they
controlled Kiautschau (Kiow-Chow) Bay, with the port of Tsingtao (where they
set up a brewery that still produces a pretty good beer). That was a
concession, just the same as Hong Kong was with the British & Macao was with
the Portuguese. The Germans also purchase from Spain the Marianas Islands
(minus Guam) & the Caroline & Palau (now known as Belau) Islands. Added to
these Pacific possessions were North-East New Guinea with the port of Madang,
the Admiralty Islands, Neu Mecklenburg (New Ireland), Nauru & Neu Pommern
(New Britain) with the port of Herbertshöhe (Rabaul), together known then as
Kaiser Wilhelmsland. Western Samoa was also part of the German Colonial
Empire.
The colonies were beginning to pay for themselves after many years of deficit
when the war broke out, & Germany was immediately cut off from them by the
Allies.
