Well, no, she threatens to leave McLintic and work as a prostitute (291.23
and 300.6), but apparently her "telepathic flashes" that his
near-unfaithfulness with Eunice at the party went unconsummated keep her
there for him. It hasn't been revealed in the text yet that Ruby is Paola --
although it's an easy guess once you know, I agree -- but it might be
worthwhile to consider why Pynchon conceals this surprise from the reader at
this stage. (And, in terms of the group read, it might be nice to add the
occasional spoiler warning in case there are those who are reading the novel
for the first time.)
