Moaning has broken...

Okay, I've largely refrained from taking part in this
most recent outbreak of hostilities, but I will note
that said hostilities ARE largely amongst the several
names named along the way already, including, of
course, my own. Any number of posters here could
easily marginalize to for all practical purposes drown
out the ugliness simply by generating other
discussions, rather than feeding the frenzy by
becoming partisan. The former IS the ultimate goal
here, isn't it? To talk our Pynchon as pleasantly as
possible? Then perhaps we should take it upon
ourselves to do so ...

I do not like that everybody else here, in the course
of at least browsing whatever comes down the line,
however it comes down the line (individual messages,
digests) inevitably suffers some collateral damage,
but I would emphasize (again) that it takes at LEAST
two to tangle, and the nastiest of the nastiness in
the past day or two was not even necessarily from the
usual suspects. Again (and again and again ...) this
is not all Doug here, this is HARDLY all Doug here,
and certainly not on a consistent, onging, daily,
sometimes hourly basis ...

Doug, perhaps, might be faulted fro being nostalgic
for presumably better--if not less contentious, at
least more civil--times here, and from what I'm
hearing here, both on and offlist, he's hardly the
only one. Me, I stepped right into the midst of a
feud which has apparently been going on for some years
now, and soon got caught in the crossfire. AFTER my
first major scrape here was with Doug, with whom I
still repeatedly find myself under fire ...

But I'd note that Doug and Terrance and I (for
starters, and to name names recently named) manage to
disagree on some fundamental issues, issues we most
likely never will be reconciled on, and still manage
to be civil with each other as well. This, I believe,
is true of the vast majority of us here, or would be,
were more of us participating more actively. But I'm
pretty sure that there will always be that constant
undertone of snide dismissal to outright snottiness as
well from some, so ...

"Sexual jealousy"? What such admittedly armchair
psychology might seriously be intended to accomplish
here, rhetorically or otherwise, I don't know. Doug
and I have had our disagreements, and continue to have
them, and no doubt will continue to have them, but
I've no doubt neither of us will ever give the other
any reason to undertake the kind of back-to-forehanded
viciousness we both taken here. There is another name
I'd suggest substituting for Doug's below ...
