Comparing Pynchon to Zappa, that's more like it, in my opinion. As a
musician, Zappa brings in a similarly wide range of high- to pop-art, crude
humor, politics, social critque, etc., in a highly creative and subversive
way, with a voice that spoke to me (when I first encountered Zappa, my
friend gave me his copy of Freak Out because Who Are the Brain Police? was
giving him nightmares) then in an unsettling way that Pynchon's work later
did.
