Mondaugen sez of Foppl:

... not only did he yarn about the past ... but he also seemed
under compulsion somehow to recreate the Deutsche-Sudwestafrika
of nearly twenty years ago, in words and perhaps deed. "Perhaps"
because as the siege party progressed it became more and more
difficult to make the distinction. (240-1)

I think that it is obviously V who has provided this "compulsion"; I'm just
wondering whether the "distinction" which is becoming "more and more
difficult" for Mondaugen to make is between 1904 and 1922, or between
"words" and "deeds". The grammatical construction would actually support the
latter interpretation rather than the former, wouldn't it?
