"Im" is a prefix. It is a variant of "in" occurring in words of Latin origin whenever the next compound starts with "m", "p" or "b". In all Latin words starting with "im-" (at least those included in my dictionary), "im" is a prefix, with the exception of words derived from and grammatically related to "imago" and "imitare".
