Never doubt for a moment that if the wealth & power of the oligarchy could
only be maintained by a kind of tyranny that would destroy what Marx called
bourgeois democracy, it would be instituted without hesitation or mercy.
Fortunately the "oligarchy" is not short sighted enough to try anything so stupid. The high degree of freedom, mobility, and individual rights of workers in the Western democracies contributes as much to economic efficiency and productivity as technology itself does. Stated another way, democracy and freedom and relatively high wages IS a technology--a technology other countries would love to be able to afford. It isn't fair of course.
