Davidson echoes the lament of countless single women who believe they
outnumber men here 2 to 1, 3 to 1 or, according to the more disenchanted,
163.8 to 1. The misconception has thrived since World War II, when an army
of office workers invaded the capital region and temporarily swelled the
female ranks.

"I've heard these complaints for so long that I almost believe they're
true," remarks Judith Graser, a psychologist who has practiced in the
District and Northern Virginia for more than 20 years.

But new statistics from the Census Bureau debunk the Washington Myth of Way
More Women. Simply put, while women are in the majority, the odds are not
nearly as bleak as most women believe.

The District itself, with a population of 572,059, is home to 23,391 men
between the ages of 35 and 39, compared with 22,558 women. Men age 30 to 34
also outnumber women, 24,522 to 24,391, 2000 census figures reveal. A
breakdown of marrieds vs. singles is not yet available.
