Hard to beat the French for eccentric writers. One of my favorites is Gerard
de Nerval -- whose Sylvie and Les filles du feu deserve to be read -- who is
said to have kept a lobster as a pet and walked it on a leash through Paris.
Why?  Because it is silent and knows the secrets of the deep, is the way I
remember the quote.  'Scuse me while I kiss this guy....
