Yes, some excellent links thrown up here, thanks y'all (Bosse-de-Nage
appears in _The Exploits and Opinions of Doctor Faustroll, Pataphysician_)
"Ha, ha", we can all agree, is a fairly uncopyrightable laugh or common
occurance or utterance. That being said, I felt inclined to bring Jarry up
because I enjoyed that particular dry passage with Oedipa and Roseman and
because the *repitition* evoked Bosse-de-Nage.
I also knew that some would cite Mlle. Jarretiere of _V_ (ch. 13?) with a
reference to Alfred Jarry ... a clue I'm willing to embrace because I feel
Pynchon and some of the Dadaists are kindred spirits. Keep in mind that
Francis Picabia, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, Trisan Tzara were some of the
first artists to seriously raise questions about the 20th century's apparent
course of de-humanization and the recombination of human and machine, a
strong Pynchon theme. It's acknowledged that Duchamp took many cues from
Jarry, though ... interestingly ... they often appear to be the same kind of
ephemerous and subtle connections that often happen with Pynchon and his
inspirations, leaving much to debate.
P himself tackles his surrealist legacy in the SL intro, railing a bit
against _Lowlands_ and _The Secret Integration_ for his unresponsible use of
it in those stories, though I feel the surreal or dadaist or absurdist
spirit is better felt in Thanatoid-space, or Byron's story, SHOCK & SHROUD,
Mason's missing calendar days, Lyle Bland's metaphysics, Plechazunga's skin
hanging on Tyrone for days ... I could go on and on ...
ha, ha
