Your housewife mother?  That's your example? 

You might consider that there were numerous millions of people lying between 
your mother and your imagined "small circle" of in-the-know hipsters.

If your mother is one example, I'm another.  I knew of LSD in 1966, knew 
people who were taking it, had access to it had I wanted it, and I was on the 
east coast and, trust me, as far from anyone's idea of a hipster (whatever 
that is) as was your poor mother.  

As to Huxley, you might be consistent.  You've cited Pynchon's backlist 
status, his presence on college booklists to argue for his influence.  In 
either case, numbers have not everything to do with influence, less I should 
think than who exactly is reading what.
