I don't know if this has any relevance to the discussion at hand but Cold 
Spring Harbor was also the hub of eugenics activities (e.g. human 
sterilization, etc) during the first three decades of the 20th century. 
Thus, it's safe to say that the science establishment and the state hooked 
up in TP's backyard. An influence perhaps?
