"Hmm, I just wanted to write that I find the association between "currants" and "currents" rather far-fetched. But I have this second discovered that Eliot himself states in his notes on TWL that the merchant of currants and the Phoenician sailor
are identical or melt into each other. So forget about that "far-fetched", and also about the missing link between the two passages."
Some more
Norton's note re: "C.i.f."
The currants were quoted at a price "carriage and insurance free to London"; and the Bill of Lading etc. were to be handled to the buyer upon payment of the sight draft"[Eliot's note]. "C. i. f." should be "cost, insurance freight."
cfa note: Cif, to the best of my knowledge is only relevant to international trade. It is often the amount upon which tariffs and taxes are calculated.......
back to the phoenician skeleton, ironically "hight" Phlebas -
"And the profit and loss
A current under sea
Picked his bones in whispers"
"Current Accounts" reflect the economic activity represented by a nation's international trade, primarily in goods and services...
THough it may be entirely "coincidental", "death" and injury, associated with commercial activity, are viewed in economics as "hidden costs", and the theory of "cost accounting" is that ALL costs associated with a product need be assessed to the "liable" parties, which according to theory is ultimately the consumer.....
