And, yet again from Charles Hollander, "Pynchon, JFK
and the CIA: Magic Eye Views of The Crying of Lot 49,"
Pynchon Notes 40-41 (Spring-Fall 1997), pp. 61-106 ...

"Dr. Hilarius' name is not Hilarius; it takes the
Latinate form of the name of St. Hilary of Poitiers,
St. Hilarius of the Arian Controversy. Dr. Hilarius
is an ex-Nazi now doing drug research, and of course
the Nazis were involved in a moderen Aryan
controversy. Dr. Hilarius recalls St. Hilarius, and
Arian recalls Aryan. Aryan recalls Hitler's
"Aryanization" program: Jews were declared
non-citizens, and the wealthy were forced to sell
their businesses at far below market value, while the
less fortunate were simply dispossesed of their
property, which was either seized by the state or
dispersed among Nazi Party favorites." (pp. 71-2)

It might seem Hollander is overemphasizing the obvious
here, but, keep in mind, one of his themes here, as it
was in "Pynchon's Inferno" (Cornell Alumni News, Nov.
1978: 24-30) ...

... is disenfracnchisement, dispossession, exile.
Again, "El Deschidado" ...

But while Hilarius was still on the table ...
