French man wins 'pig screaming' contest

A French man has ousted the reigning champion of a pig screaming imitation
competition.

The competition in the village of Trie-Sur-Baise in the Midi Pyrenees was
part of its 20th pourcailhade, or pig festival.

Contestants must imitate a screaming pig during various stages of its life -
including just before it's slaughtered.

Michel Vauvin, who lives near Bordeaux, took the top spot from Andres
Farran, from Sesca, who has won four times previously.

The victor wins a full pig, along with its head.

The festival also included a black pudding-eating championship which was won
by Bernard Lasbat, who managed to scoff 1m 20cms of the pudding in just five
minutes.

Previous champions include an 80-year-old man and a 13-year-old contestant.

Between 2,000 and 2,500 people celebrate the pig festival each year.

I was present at a pig-killing on a farm not very far from this place, some
years ago. The farmers on that occasion let the pig do all the screaming.
