Well, I found the scene baffling as hell. A very muddled atonement on
Hilarius's part,.apparently a principal element being a jokey acceptance of
Freud the Jew over Jung (is this to show he doesn't discriminate?) along
with the unbelievable assertion that Freud's view of humanity was a rosy
one, the exact opposite of the truth of course.. Is this H's or P's mistake.
Probably neither. As I say it was merely baffling. I will venture this.
Though, knowing what we the readers know of Buchenwald Hilarius's past is
vile but now he seems less repentant than nuts. Perhaps driven so by the
horror of it all to be sure. Just my off the top of the head opinion.
Relative to Malignd's critique we can only wonder why there was not a tiny
bit of foreshadowing of this scene when we met Herr Doktor in chapter 1.
