I was referring to your citing Hollander drawing conclusions about Pynchon 
personally (if I understood), writing "like a scared Russian," "as though he 
fears for his life," etc.  If a "paranoid" point of view, wrecked what would 
otherwise be good fiction, one would have  better reason to wonder in this 
fashion about Pynchon personally.  But since it serves his fiction (in my 
opinion), such speculation seems groping and feckless.
