Ludwig Prandtl (1875-1953), a German physicist, often called the "father of 
aerodynamics." His famous book on the theory of wings, Tragflü geltheorie, 
was published in 1918.

His teacher was August Foppl, interesting enough.  Guess it'd be pretty cool 
to be thought of as the father of aerodynamics.  Of course, we know where 
that led: to rockets
