Shall I research a word?

If  Mauthner reduces knowledge to a form of speech, he
reduces thinking to  demonstrable linguistic habit. 
and so what we are here thinking is but the current
use, the habitual use, of language. 

So the characters in Beckett speak. So their words are
merely signs, not of knowledge, but of the failure of
knowledge. Words are not about anything, but the
impossibility of there being anything but. 
Of course the impossibility does not keep the
characters quiet. No, because talking is the only form
of thinking possible and there is no refuge in
silence. 

Silence,  Melville said, is the consecration of the
world.

What if that "over-accumulation of signs,"
"revelations" blinds a young Republican "unfit perhaps
for marches and sit-ins" (p. 104) to, say, poverty,
loneliness, alcoholism, racism, anti-Semitism,
homophobia, social unrest, political extremism,
political intrigue, the military-industrial complex,
military adventurism (Vietnam IS explicitly mentioned,
p. 108), et al., hidden in plain sight?  


Yes, and there seems to be, obviously, generation
hollows and gaps and these are connected and yet
disconnected by language, communication, media, the TV
(the young kids tell the old man that Porky has a
nephew, Cicero). And, when Oed walks onto the Campus,
she can't decipher the college kid's signs.  
And what about Oed's inability to communicate with her
own generation? What about the gender gap? 
Something foul, something rotten, the dead estate of
some pathology, some National reflex, something, maybe
like the ego only incidental, suspended like an Uncle
Junky pointing his finger, has shaped her.
