"The book offers the possibility that its religious
metaphor is only metaphor: but if the
book were founded on this limited possibility, the
remaining portions of the book would make no sense,
and there would be little reason to write it in the
first place."

     --Edward Mendelson, "The Sacred,
the Profane, and The Crying of Lot 49"

This essay is the best and most important
essay that has ever been written about CL49.

Of course, it's only my very humble opinion.
And, I do tend to think the sacred and the profane
is at the the very heart of P's fiction.

But, don't worry, I'm off P's religion for this novel.

Well, M&D is coming up.
Paul Mackin was spot on in his
reading of the stuff I posted from and
about Eliade. Not suprising, but Eliade, so
very important to P's work, was attacked here,
his ideas turned on their heads, charges, unfounded,
of Nazism and the like. Too bad.
