SCRIBNER'S DOUBLE HEADER WITH DELILLO
by Sara Nelson

Thursday, August 23, 2001

In a savvy marketing move, Scribner has announced that it will
re-release the prologue to Don DeLillo's Underworld to coincide with
the fiftieth anniversary of "the shot heard round the world" that it
details. The best read part of the mammoth book of 1997 -- which
reimagines the pivotal game of the 1951 pennant race between the New
York Giants and the Brooklyn Dodgers -- was originally excerpted in
Harper's Magazine. But in the last few weeks, Scribner editor in chief
Nan Graham and DeLillo's agent Lois Wallace came up with the idea to
republish the 90 or so pages as Pafko At the Wall, with a new cover and
a new frontispiece, though the text has not been changed or updated.
Scribner already owns the rights to the book and executives say DeLillo
will get his usual royalties. The $16 hardcover will be published on
October 3, the date of the fateful game.
