Simultaneous movement / stillness

Not sure what to make of it.  Just a few examples:

p36, 7:  The hairspray can zooms around violently while
Metzger and Oedipa cower on the bathroom floor.

p35:  Metzger kisses the palm of Oedipa's hand, his tongue
grazing "briefly among her fates furrows, the changeless
salt hatchings [hatch = newness, movement] of her identity."
We could spend a week on this one sentence alone!

p35:  While the commercials are chasing one another on TV,
Metzger and Oedipa gaze into each others' eyes for 5 minutes.
Again, the inanimate seems more real than people.

p27:  When Oedipa (a real woman made of flesh and blood) pulls
into the parking lot of the motel, the air is "dead-still" while an
"artificial windstorm" blows around Echo's (a fabricated, fake
woman made of painted sheet metal) gauze dress.
