"'I'll have to write to the publishers. K. da
Chingado and Company? You ever hear of them? New
York.'" (Lot 49, Ch. 6, p. 151)
>From J. Kerry Grant, A Companion to The Crying of Lot
49 (Athens: U of Georgia P, 1994) ...
"H151.23, B113.24 'K. da Chingado' Evidently Mexican
Spanish would allow 'chingado' to mean 'fucked,' in
the sense of 'in deep trouble.' 'K. da' reads as
'quedar,' to remain, giving 'permanently fucked' as a
possible reading of the publisher's name." (p. 123)
By the way, the J.B. Lippincott Company, which first
published V. and The Crying of Lot 49, is still around
and still in Philadelphia ...

Though now they're Lippincott Williams & Wilkins,
dealing strictly in medical texts ...
