Well, seeing as how the various Topicks of mesmerism,
murder and the Japanese cinema seem to come up here,
at the local university theater this weekend ...

Friday-Sunday, December 7-9 — 7pm and 9:15pm

Cure

(Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Japan, 115m, 35mm, Japanese
w/English subtitles, 1997)

A series of strange copycat murders, where all of the
victim’s are marked with a large “X”, are being
committed by seemingly unmotivated, separate murderers
that stay close to the scene of the crime. The
murderers lack of knowledge and motivation, frustrates
and confuses the police until they start following the
trail of an enigmatic drifter. Identified as Kunihiko
Mamiya, a former medical student fascinated by Franz
Mesmer’s work in the field of hypnotism, seems to have
powerful hypnotic powers that cause “normal” citizens
to commit strange copycat murders. Detective Takabe
and his psychologist friend Sakuma, despite being
aware of the Mamiya’s devious powers, become seduced
by his ability to deeply question those around him and
plumb their very souls. The first film to be released
theatrically, beginning this August in New York, by
new Japanese master Kiyoshi Kurosawa. Part atmospheric
crime film and part philosophical meditation.
