But the question of what type of assistance is not easily answered. I don't
disagree for the most part, but such noblise oblige is also a self-centered
act, propigating markets, free trade, democracy, and the like, for the
benefit of the host country thus we're back to the same system.

not sure about the analogy, nor the message--there are many passages without
narrative comment in TRP that seem to harbor a hard-on for
self-destruction--Pynchon's message thru the wide range of characters is all
over the map. Find the small comforts and cherish them, but outside of that,
it's a pretty pale to grim picture of mankind's predictament seems to _one_
of the many messages our author is putting forth.
