I agree with Nika on all counts. Marcel Reich-Ranicki is an interesting person
and a great entertainer IMHO, but as a literary critic he is mostly an idiot.
Which is a shame because he, more than anybody else, has been defining the German
public's literary taste for decades. MRR is certainly not solely responsible for
the fact that the German literary scene is in the deplorable state it is, but he
has played his part.

As for Mason & Dixon: The persons who constitute the Quartett are not really
equipped to deal with demanding contemporary literature - too long, too
difficult, not allowing for simple summaries and judgements (is it erotic or is
it not?) etc. It would have been too much work. It's television.
