Rich,
All I know is what I heard from Professor Krafft about the existence of the
interview in the first place and what Naoki says after reading it and
providing this rough translation. It appears that a reporter from Playboy
Japan managed to interview Pynchon. It does sound as if Pynchon is
responding to a series of questions from a reporter, as Naoki suggests.
It sounds to me as if he was interviewed in New York, but I don't know that
for sure.
I don't know yet if this will also appear in an upcoming U.S. issue of
Playboy, but I wouldn't be surprised.
That Pynchon responded to a journalist's questions is not surprising. He
has done so several times -- most recently for the Hadju book on Farina;
previously P talked to CNN. He has also responded to questions from at
least one P-lister, to my knowledge. Rumors have circulated that P was
close to breaking his silence with some sort of authorized interview at the
time that M&D was published, too.
I wouldn't call it "odd" that Playboy Japan got the interview-- sounds to
me as if an enterprising reporter made the effort to get an interview and
caught Pynchon in a talkative mood.
