Before the attack on the World Trade Center SNL would do a lot of funny stuff
about the acting president of the USA based on his perceived stupidity.
There was even a sit-com on the Comedy Central cable channel (owned at least
partially by Ben Stein, a lovable Nixon-worshipper) about a lovable buffoon
named George Bush, who happened to be the president. While often laughing
out loud (I'm easy) I always considered them cheap shots, suspecting that the
Shrub was actually smarter than that.
Now all that is gone. Will Ferrell's portrayal of Bush is now kinder,
gentler. Osama bin Laden has become the buffoon. If SNL is hors de combat,
it might have something to do with the show being produced by NBC. They
still poke fun at Cheney (Darrell Hammond has gone from horndog Clinton to
sneaky Dick). But the satire is now pretty tame.
